Choosing a topic

Upon researching on the conventions of documentaries, I came up with these 7 steps that should be followed when making a documentary which I plan to follow when producing my very own documentary.

  1. Tell a story you care about
  2. Research
  3. Make a plan
  4. Create a shot list/storyboard
  5. Start shooting
  6. Start editing
  7. Distribute
Many documentaries are created with the intention of changing one's mind and/or bringing light to a certain issue to the masses. Others may very well just be created for entertainment purposes but I want mine to be able to inflict change and to educate people on a certain issue. My only problem as of now is finding that certain issue to be the basis of my documentary.

My first choice for a documentary that I though about is the current divide that America has on guns. For my subjects I would most probably choose someone who handles guns on the daily basis such as a range officer or an average citizen who carries. My second subject would be an average citizen who has never owned or used a gun. This would help maybe show why there is basically no middle ground when discussing gun violence in America.
